A brief exploration of one of my favourite places in Southern California, Mecca!
Full narration text:
On the Northern edge of the Salton Sea in California's Colorado desert is Mecca, an unincorporated community located almost directly atop the famous San Andres Fault.
Mecca, & the other towns surrounding Salton Sea, had a brief stint as tourist destinations in the 1950's & 60's, but the agricultural runoff which polluted the area sidelined any longterm dreams of becoming the next Palm Springs.
Sitting 150 feet below sea level Mecca is surrounded by date & grapefruit orchards fed, since 1949, by the waters of Coachella Canal.
