literally translated from german as “room of wonder” in english it is generally understood to mean a cabinet of curiosities. in renaissance europe cabinets of curiosities were large collections of objects that may or may not have had clear categorical relationships. they are often considered the precursors to museums & were collected by both aristocrats & the merchant classes alike.
