For episode 2 of my new Youtube channel I wanted to jump right into the thick of it & get started. Watch the video for 3 tips to boost your creativity right now.
Ok, so you’ve gone for a walk, you’ve got your notebook & your hotel pen collection, & you’re ready for that prompt I promised? Get yourself some scissors & some “I suck & I love to fail” spirit cuz here it is:
Cut. It. Up.
Grab an old book, a magazine, some junk mail you’ve been meaning to throw away & get ready to start cutting that stuff up. If you’re into words, hack up text to make your own poem or story, if you wanna go with a picture, create a collage. The only rule? You’ve got to stick to ONE source material.
Yup, that’s the constraint. If you chose an old paperback romance novel that’s all you get to work with. If you chose a People Magazine, that’s your complete materials list. Find ways to deconstruct your source & make something totally new, don’t be afraid to be hella ambitious & try something crazy; maybe your source isn’t paper? Maybe you’re deconstructing some vintage clothes? Maybe you wanna work exclusively with empty soup cans? You’ll notice if you peruse my art page that this prompt is something I like to do myself. It’s a good way to exercise those creative muscles. From blackout poems to paper weaving, fashioning something new from existing material is the theme for the week.
